Is it counter productive to do cardio when weight training?

Is this true? What about if you do cardio on the off days of weight lifting? For example, if you lift weights Mon, Wed, and Fri, would it be alright to do cardio on Tues and Thurs? Or if you strength train Mon – Fri, then could you do cardio on Saturdays?

When should I start weight training?

I am about 50 lbs over weight, and I do about 30 minutes on an elliptical 4 to 5 times a week pretty intensely.

I did some squats, push ups, and sit ups. I was so sore that I couldn’t do the elliptical for about a week!

Did I start to soon (strength training) or go to hard?
